Guidance and University Counselling

Working in close partnership with students and families, Guidance and University Counsellors provide individualized support with Grade 9 through 12 course selection to ensure that each student's academic program aligns with his strengths, interests, aspirations, and post-secondary goals. Through ongoing conversations and intentional planning, counsellors help boys develop self-awareness, explore a wide range of university and career pathways, and make informed decisions that support their long-term success and wellbeing.

As students begin to explore life beyond Crescent, counsellors guide them through every stage of the university planning process. Emphasizing each student's best-fit pathway, counsellors encourage boys to investigate programs that align with their individual talents, values, interests, and future aspirations, rather than focusing solely on institutional rankings. Students receive comprehensive guidance throughout the application process for Canadian, American, UK, and other international universities, including support with application planning, timelines, essays, scholarships, interviews, and emerging admissions practices. Additional specialized support, including writing coaching and interview preparation, is available to further strengthen students' applications.

Recognizing the rapidly evolving landscape of post-secondary admissions, the University Guidance program integrates innovative tools and practices, including the thoughtful use of artificial intelligence to support research, idea generation, interview preparation, and application planning. These tools support students' authentic voices and critical thinking, helping them present meaningful personal narratives grounded in personal experiences and reflection.

The Guidance and University Counselling Department values strong partnerships with families throughout the post-secondary planning process. Parents are engaged through ongoing communication, educational programming, and individual meetings that help them understand evolving admissions trends while supporting their son's growing independence and decision-making.

Some families may choose to engage an independent educational consultant. When this occurs, Crescent's Guidance and University Counsellors will work collaboratively with students, families, and outside consultants to ensure that all school-based responsibilities and application deadlines are met. The school remains responsible for submitting official documentation, such as transcripts, counsellor and teacher references, and other required reports through the appropriate application platforms. To ensure a coordinated process, open communication among all parties is essential. Families working with an outside consultant are asked to provide the consultant's contact information to their son's Guidance and University Counsellor at the outset of the application process.
