Helping Parents Navigate AI

The Crescent Centre for Boys’ Education (CCBE) held its first Compass Series Parent Workshop on Tuesday, January 20. The virtual workshop, “Navigating Generative AI,” was designed to demystify AI by educating and equipping parents with the tools and knowledge they need to shift from policing their sons’ AI use to coaching them on how to best use this emerging technology.

“From conversations I had with parents at Coffee and Conversation events in the fall, it was clear to me that there is an appetite for more education on this topic,” says Natalie Vera, Crescent’s Director of Educational Technology and Innovation, who curated and led the interactive workshop.

More than 40 parents attended, signalling deep engagement and a desire to partner with the school. As Dr. Sandra Boyes, Executive Director of Professional Learning and Research for the CCBE, notes, the event was “a huge celebration of alignment and partnership,” with parents eager to understand how Crescent is managing AI so they can reinforce those messages at home. You can find the workshop notes here.

The Compass Series is a new initiative from the Crescent Centre for Boys’ Education emerging from the School’s Breakthrough 2030 strategic plan and reflecting the School’s belief that educating parents is essential. “ You can't raise men of character as a school alone,” says Dr. Boyes. “And parents can’t do it without help from school. This workshop series helps our families communicate in a shared language and gives parents the resources they need.”

The next Compass Series Parent Workshop will be held on February 17—stay tuned for details.
