Bloom's Taxonomy and AI

by Natalie Vera, Director of Educational Technology & Innovation
As we navigate an era of profound technological advancement, our responsibility as educators is to critically examine how new tools can deepen, rather than simply disrupt, our pedagogical practices. A particularly insightful resource in this exploration is the Bloom’s Taxonomy and AI guide from Educators Technology.
This text thoughtfully maps the capabilities of artificial intelligence onto the familiar structure of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, providing a powerful framework for integrating AI not as an end in itself, but as a catalyst for richer learning experiences that align with our mission to develop Men of Character from Boys of Promise.

The guide's approach resonates deeply with the strategic themes of Breakthrough 2030. To optimize the fundamentals, we can leverage AI to enhance foundational knowledge and comprehension. The text illustrates how tools can help students master basic facts and concepts (Remember), while others can summarize complex readings or explain difficult concepts through relatable analogies (Understand). This allows us to fine-tune the building blocks of learning, ensuring our boys have a solid base from which to tackle more complex challenges. This aligns with our Crescent AI Integration Framework, which encourages such uses at introductory levels with clear oversight.

As we intensify our focus on what makes a Crescent education exceptional, relational, boy-centric, character-infused, active, and experiential, the guide demonstrates how AI can support higher-order thinking. We are not aiming to automate critical thought but to augment it. Students can use AI as a thinking partner to analyze complex information, such as comparing different historical perspectives on an event, or to evaluate the credibility and bias of sources. These applications push students beyond simple recall and into nuanced analysis and judgment, fostering the very skills of resilience and leadership we aim to cultivate.

Ultimately, this work calls on us to reach beyond the horizon, preparing our boys for an ever-changing world by striking a balance between tradition and innovation. The Bloom’s Taxonomy and AI framework is a perfect example of this, applying a modern lens to a classic pedagogical model. By teaching our students how to ethically and effectively use AI across all cognitive levels, from generating ideas to creating original products, we are developing critical AI literacy. This approach ensures Crescent's continued relevance and growth as a leading academic institution for boys. By embracing AI as a literacy to develop, we empower our students to become the responsible, innovative, and character-driven leaders the future requires. I look forward to continuing this important work in partnership with all of you.
