Coding Makes Math More Fun

by Crescent School staff
Tony Qian, Middle School robotics technician, is using coding to teach Grade 5 students math concepts.
Using Scratch, an educational programming platform, students are learning to code their own interactive stories, animations and games. “The students are having a lot of fun in class,” says Qian. “Meanwhile, they are developing important math skills like problem solving, logic and computational and algorithmic thinking.”

In addition to building their math skills, coding also teaches students how to think creatively, take complex ideas and break them down to manageable parts, and persevere through challenges.

“These skills and ways of thinking will translate across the math curriculum throughout their years at Crescent,” says Qian. “They are also picking up essential life skills our graduates need for future success.”
