Promoting Excellence in Math Education

The Ontario Association for Mathematics Education conference offered lots of learning for teachers.
Sharing ideas and educating math teachers on the most current pedagogical practices – this was the draw for Lower School teachers Justin Gadd-Thompson and Katie Chadsey to attend the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education (OAME) annual conference in Ottawa in May 2019.

The conference topics covered the purposeful use and sequencing of tasks to unlock what students know and inform teachers of their next move to enhance learning progression.

“I found this concept to be particularly intriguing," says Chadsey. "It is a practical tool that I can use in my classroom.” Another inspiring session was on distributed practice, where math concepts reappear and are reinforced throughout the year to enhance learning.

“In order to truly master a concept, students need to see it consistently over a longer period of time,” says Gadd-Thompson. “This is far more effective than teaching math strands in their own contained silos.”
