Design Thinking for Teachers and Students

by Crescent School staff
A group of Crescent's Middle School students and teacher Greg Ryerson participated in a program for human-centred design thinking in January 2019.
The program was led by Future Design School in Toronto. Human-centred design thinking teaches how to design solutions without personal bias and with the end user’s needs in mind.

Part one of the program equipped teachers with the skills to lead a human-centred design thinking process. Part two was Future Prize, a competition with student teams competing to solve a real-world challenge and pitch their solution to a panel of expert judges. Middle School teacher Greg Ryerson and three Middle School students were one of 31 teams from CIS Ontario schools tackling the question, how might we leverage innovative technology to solve a problem in our local community?

“Students need opportunities to think critically and with compassion about real-world issues,” says Ryerson. “This experience fostered creativity, piqued their curiosity and made them feel empowered to reshape the world around them.”
