Mindfulness and Reflection In and Outside the Classroom

by Crescent School staff
Mindfulness has benefits for students in the classroom and in outdoor education.
Upper School teacher Chris Corley attended a mindfulness workshop sponsored by the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) of Ontario in November 2018, to learn how this technique can be used with students. The first day of the workshop was dedicated to purposeful student reflection during outdoor educational experiences. The second day focused on mindful self-regulation in the classroom.

Corley teaches English and also leads the Grade 12 trip to a camp in northern Ontario each fall. She sees the value of mindfulness in student life given its constant state of environmental disruption and focus adjustment based on space, class and teacher.

“I have come to value the regular observation of quiet, almost meditative moments with students before we launch into the day’s lesson,” says Corley. “It is incredible to see how their overall focus and engagement improve with just five minutes during which they can, with some gentle guidance, ‘re-set’ themselves between classes and activities.”
