Boys Enjoy BEAR Week Adventures

New places, new experiences and new friendships were the focus of the second week of school at Crescent School, when all the boys took part in special BEAR Week activities.

BEAR Week is an annual Crescent tradition that integrates leadership and character education into each student’s school experience. It is named in honour of faculty member Ross “Bear” MacDonald, who retired in 2011. In each grade, BEAR Week activities help the boys “Be Engaged, Active and Responsible” through fun and active learning.

For the boys in Grades 3 and 4, BEAR Week featured games at school and day trips to places like the Evergreen Brickworks, Kortwright Conservation Centre and YMCA Cedar Glen, with activities designed to help the boys build friendships and a sense of personal responsibility. The boys in Grades 5 and 6 spent two nights at Camp Wenonah in Bracebridge, where their outdoor adventures helped them develop self-reliance and leadership skills.

The Middle School boys also enjoyed outdoor adventures, spending several nights at Camp Arowhon in Algonquin Park, with a program designed to help the boys identify and develop their personal strengths.

In the Upper School, the Grade 9s spent BEAR Week on campus, with activities that introduced them to Upper School life and laid the groundwork for the Upper School leadership program.

Grade 10 boys participated in their choice of two trips: a two-night Eco-Challenge adventure in Algonquin Park, and a two-night canoeing and hiking challenge in Killarney Provincial Park. Both trips fostered the boys’ teamwork skills and confidence.

Boys in Grade 11 applied their leadership skills by serving as counsellors on the BEAR Week activities with the younger boys. This interaction between boys in different grades is an important part of the Crescent brotherhood experience.

For the Grade 12 Grads, BEAR Week is a time to reflect. During a two-night stay at Onondaga Camp in Minden, the Grads looked back on their school experience and considered what their final year at Crescent will be like.
