Olympian Simon Whitfield Visits Crescent

Four-time Olympian Simon Whitfield visited Crescent School on October 3, 2017 to speak to the entire student body about his experiences as a champion triathlete.

Whitfield, who won gold and silver Olympic medals for the triathlon along with many world championships, shared the following advice with our boys:

  • it's important to focus on what - not how - you're going to do, and systematically improve all the details that contribute to the big picture.
  • play "imagine if" and "what about" games (like Dungeons & Dragons) because they give you a vivid imagination about what's possible.
  • reading fiction helps athletes win championships, because an athlete who reads and writes fiction will be able to visualize what's required for success.
In addition to his assembly presentation, Whitfield spent time with the boys in their phys.ed. classes.

Simon Whitfield's visit was made possible by the Leadership in Sports Endowment, in memory of John Stransman, which supports sportsmanship, leadership and good coaching practices in sports at Crescent. The endowment also allows Crescent to invite insightful speakers to talk to students about how values and character are developed through sport. We are grateful to the Stransman family (including alumni Steve Stransman ’03 and Peter Stransman ’05) and other generous donors for their important contribution to the education of our boys.
