Endings, Beginnings, and the Strength of Crescent

As I write this final blog of the 2025–2026 school year, I am still carrying the joy and energy of last week’s Closing Ceremonies. These celebrations for Lower, Middle, and Upper School, as well as Graduation, are more than markers of the end of a school year; they are a microcosm of all that is good about Crescent.
Of course, our boys are at the heart of these occasions. Their talents, achievements, passions, and growth are on full display, and they are the reason we gather in celebration. But I am also deeply heartened by the community that comes together to cheer them on. In addition to parents, we see alumni, past faculty and staff, and benefactors return year after year. Their presence reminds us that this school is not only a place boys attend; it is a community to which people remain connected long after their time here has ended.

Each ceremony had its own distinct character, yet together they tell a larger story about who we are and what we value.

The Lower School celebration featured several wonderful performances that showcased the many talents of our youngest students. Just as importantly, they revealed the boys’ growing confidence, collaboration, and school spirit. Watching them on stage, I couldn’t help but imagine what these ceremonies will look like next year, when our Grade 1 and 2 students complete their first full year at Crescent.

The Middle School ceremony captured a stage of growth that is both dynamic and deeply formative. These are years of discovery, when boys begin to understand more fully who they are, how they can lead, and what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves. It was a reminder that the Middle School years are not simply a bridge between Lower and Upper School; they are a vital and distinctive part of the Crescent journey.

The Upper School ceremony, which underwent a significant reimagining a few years ago, has become a true celebration of House spirit, Character-in-Action, and the boys’ deep engagement in every aspect of school life. It is remarkable to see just how much can happen in our School over the course of one year, in classrooms, on stages, on fields and courts, through service, leadership, mentorship, creativity, and friendship. And yet, somehow, Crescent and the boys make it all work.

Graduation, as always, was a moment of tremendous pride. Each graduate crossed the stage to receive his diploma as his personal reflection was read aloud, reminding us that every Crescent journey is unique. This year’s 103 graduates hold extraordinary promise, and we send them into the world with confidence and admiration.

Their Upper School years were not without profound challenge. Last year, they tragically lost a classmate to cancer. Jack’s absence was felt deeply at Graduation, but so too was his presence—in the memories, friendships, and futures of every young man who had the privilege of calling him a friend. His spirit remains part of this class and part of Crescent.

Our Closing Ceremonies reveal the strength of an ecosystem that continually pays it forward. Boys are encouraged and inspired by those who came before them. Families give back so that others may benefit. Faculty and staff pour their hearts and talents into each student's growth. Alumni return, benefactors continue to believe, and the mission carries on.

That is the beauty of Crescent. Each year ends, but the work continues. Each class graduates, but the brotherhood grows. Each boy leaves his mark, and every generation helps shape the next.

As we close this school year, I do so with immense gratitude: for our boys, for our families, for our faculty and staff, for our alumni, and for all those who continue to believe in Crescent’s mission. Thank you for another remarkable year.
