Getting To Know Head Boy Oscar Benitah ’26

What is your favourite activity/hobby?
Watching videos that analyze movies and TV shows. I like exploring how there's more to a story than meets the eye, and also why they're relevant in today's world.

What is the most important thing you've read?
In Grade 7, I read a book called The Book Thief, about a family that takes in a girl during the Holocaust. It teaches you a lot about mortality. When I’m reading, I feel like I’m living with the characters and experiencing moments with them, and I think that's very powerful.

Do you have any pets?
I have a dog named Georgie. She's a Bernadoodle and loves people.

What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday?
I like to sleep in a little and enjoy brunch with my family at a great cafe called The Grind—they do a really good breakfast sandwich. Then I get any homework done and read some Marvel superhero comics. To end the day, I might catch a movie with my friends or brother.

What is your favourite holiday?
We celebrate Christmas in my family thanks to my mom’s side, but we’re also Jewish on my dad’s side, so we celebrate Hanukkah, too. I like how the holidays are a time when everyone comes together.

What is your favourite song?
“Broken Window Serenade” by country artist Whiskey Myers. It's a song about love and loss. Loving a person even when they're going through a tough time, even despite their flaws.

What is your most treasured possession?
It's a ring that's been handed down from my (paternal) great-grandfather. My dad got the ring when his dad passed away. He says there are very few times in your life that are as hard as losing your father. The ring is a reminder that even if your loved ones aren’t there with you, they're watching.

Which talent would you most like to have?
Honestly, juggling. I’ve never been able to get the hang of it.

What do you want to be "when you grow up?"
I’m not totally sure what I want to be, but I’ve grown up in a household with two lawyers—my mom and dad. It’s given me an analytical way of thinking when it comes to writing, finding patterns, and organizing my ideas. I think this will be useful in many applications, including law.

What was one of the most memorable projects you did at Crescent?
One paper I did for an AP seminar was on loneliness. I was looking at it from a more scientific perspective on what exactly causes loneliness and what makes people socially isolate. I really enjoyed being able to explore my curiosity on the subject and it helped me make sense of the world.

What is your favourite memory of Crescent School?
My favourite memory is from my first day in Mr. Trood’s Grade 4 classroom. I was very scared as I thought I was in for a very tough teacher, but I was so wrong. Mr. Trood ended up being one of my favourite teachers and a true mentor. That year, on the last day of school before December break, I was crying in the classroom because I didn't want to leave. It gives me a laugh every time I think about it.

What advice would you give to a Grade 3 Crescent student today?
It's simple: Be involved. The Crescent experience is most fulfilling when you're involved because everybody in this community cares. The school offers so much, and your effort will pay off in the way of opportunities, relationships, and, of course, memories.
