Throughout the month of January, Crescent marked Mental Health Awareness Month with a variety of age- and stage-appropriate strategies and resources structured around three key pillars: Awareness, Conversation, and Activities. “ In our planning with the mental health committee, we focused on well-being, engagement, and belonging, which are key priorities in our Breakthrough 2030 strategic plan,” says Gina Kay, Executive Director of Crescent Student Services.
This year’s theme was “MENd the Mind,” encouraging awareness, wellness, and open dialogue about students’ mental well-being, with a special emphasis on boys and men. Students engaged with assemblies and skits, learned practical techniques, and received tips designed to normalize discussions about mental health. Library read-alouds, visual displays, and connections to school and community resources further reinforced key messages and provided accessible support.
A range of activities integrated into ICOH, Mentor Group, and community time featured wellness practices such as meditation, gratitude, time in nature, self-expression, and building healthy relationships.
January can be a difficult month as students transition from Winter Break. With thoughtful consideration of student needs, Crescent aims to turn a challenging time into a positive impact. “We know that if students enjoy their time at school, it fosters engagement and belonging within their community,” explains Kay. “Those contribute to their all-around well-being, including their academic success.”
A visit from Corporate Canine Therapy was cancelled due to inclement weather and will be rescheduled to a later date. This much-loved program helps reduce stress, boost positive emotions, and offers students a calming and supportive connection.
