Fusing Education with Art

October saw forty Middle School boys working with a contemporary glass artist during four three-hour visual arts workshops at Verbeek Glass Studio in the heart of the Film District. Ten boys attended each workshop, bringing home stunning results currently displayed in the Middle School. “The boys are incredibly happy to share their spectacular glass works of art,” says Middle School art teacher Harriet Wynne-Jones, who championed the excursion. “It was a lifetime opportunity that gave the learners an extraordinary studio experience working with glass.”

This studio-rich experience supported the boys’ learning of the language of art and design through creation. According to Ms. Wynne-Jones, “Character-in-Action experiences such as these allow magic to happen for the boys. They cultivate a deep understanding and skills that go beyond academic learning. We know authentic, non-academic learning can fuel academic learning and celebrate social and emotional growth and development.”

The Middle School art students benefited enormously from receiving professional feedback in a creative milieu that validated their strong creative skillset and, at the same time, inspired them to invite new possibilities that could take them in new directions. We look forward to celebrating the boy's beautiful glass works at LUNA in the spring!
