Crescent Student Wins Essay Contest on “The Crown, Cricket, and Canada”

Jackson Rosenhek ’25 was recognized recently for his winning submission in the Ontario Schools Cricket Association (OSCA) 2022 Student Essay Contest. The annual essay contest supports the OSCA’s mission of promoting healthy, active lifestyles, and physical and mental wellbeing among young people of all genders through the sport of cricket.

One of only four secondary student winners, Rosenhek’s essay demonstrated “outstanding efforts in discussing the royal patronage, Commonwealth connections, impact, history, and growth of cricket in Canada,” according to the OSCA. The twist? Rosenhek doesn’t play cricket.

“I've always been interested in it,” he says. “So I thought the essay contest would be a good opportunity to not only practice writing but also learn more.”

The theme of the contest, “The Crown, Cricket, and Canada,” meant that Rosenhek spent time researching the connection between these three seemingly unrelated topics. “I didn't really realize how much of cricket is ingrained in Canadian history,” he says. After submitting his essay Rosenhek didn’t hear from the OSCA for some weeks and assumed he had lost — until he got a congratulatory email during class.
