We Are What We Are: Pride at Crescent

“I Am What I Am” was this year’s Pride Week theme from May 2 to 9. Kicking off with the raising of the rainbow flag, the week celebrated individuality with activities, classroom conversations and an Upper School assembly.

Lower School students learned about the meaning behind the Progress Flag, and created a large mural where they displayed words and pictures that represent themselves. As part of the Guest Reader Program, Lower School Liaison Prefect Steven Vasilakos '22 took advantage of the opportunity to read Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag to Grade 5 students. Middle and Upper School students heard from alumnus Jeremy Gilchrist ’11 during a moderated panel at the Pride Day Assembly.  He shared how a welcoming community can make a difference to a youth who hasn’t yet come out. “Pride can be so many different things. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you identify with the LGBTQ+ community — it could mean that you’re proud to support them.”
