Our Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
In the spirit of respecting and celebrating one another’s differences, Crescent School recently developed its 2021–2022 Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DIB) Action Plan. It builds upon a six-month plan launched in 2020–2021. The process was facilitated by Dr. Joseph D. Nelson, a Senior Research Fellow with the School Participatory Action Research Collaborative (SPARC) at the University of Pennsylvania and Assistant Professor of Educational Studies at Swarthmore College.
Dr. Nelson is also a member of the Crescent Centre for Boys’ Education (CCBE) Advisory Panel.
“As a foundational document, the Diversity Statement lies alongside our mission statement, our vision and our values,” says Headmaster Michael Fellin. “The DIB Action Plan gives actionable steps to ensure that what we express gets done. We want to be transparent about what we’re trying to do. By holding ourselves accountable, it says that we are committed to this endeavour.”
The plan relies upon a distributed leadership approach, and every member of Crescent’s staff shares responsibility for executing its commitments. “It’s not one person’s responsibility,” says Fellin. “It’s everybody’s business to be furthering these efforts. We’re trying to do this positively and productively, in a way that moves everything and everyone forward.”
Looking ahead, the School aims to create a multi-year action plan to ensure long-term success and accountability.
