David Thom ’92

For David, supporting Crescent School is a family tradition.
David Thom ’92 was named Crescent School’s 2014 Alumnus of the Year for his outstanding commitment to Crescent’s Alumni Internship Program.

“Giving back helps Crescent to improve its opportunities for learning and discovery for all,” says Thom. “As any alumnus will realize the moment he steps foot in a modern classroom, education is constantly expanding and changing, and giving back either in the form of donating time or funds helps the School to better meet its mission.”

The Thom Family Award, established in 1994 and presented annually to an Upper School student who demonstrates character and leadership, reflects Crescent’s deep roots in Thom’s family.

His grandfather, William Thom, was Chairman of the Board of Governors from 1960-1964, overseeing Crescent’s purchase of the School’s current Bayview campus. His father, Hugh Thom ’58, along with four uncles, attended Crescent School and his father later served as Chairman from 1998 to 2000. David Thom’s brother Matthew also attended Crescent School, graduating in 1995.

Thom is now Vice President for Design and Development at LeFrak Organization, a real estate and development firm in New York City. Although he lives in New York with his wife Melissa and their young sons, he does everything he can to support Crescent School. He’s been a strong advocate of Crescent’s Alumni Internship Program since it launched, offering internships at LeFrak for young alumni.

Thom says the Alumni Internship Program allows him to stay connected with Crescent in a meaningful way.

“Education does not stop after Grade 12, or even after university,” says Thom. “There is much that the alumni can do to help illustrate what their workplace experience is like and what skills will be needed to succeed. Crescent’s Alumni Internship Program can play a big part in this.”

David credits Alumni Internship Program founder Jay Mansoor ’92 for ensuring that the program provides valuable experiences for both the young alumni and the employers who hire them. At LeFrak, the interns work on a wide variety of architectural design and development projects.

“Jay has done an outstanding job of providing terrific candidates every year, and I can honestly say that each has contributed in real terms at a very high level,” says Thom. “I could not have asked for better interns."
