Lessons from the Teaching Kitchen

by Crescent School staff
What better way to get the boys to “mind their food choices” than a hands-on cooking and nutrition demonstration?
Middle School teacher Peter Vaisanen did just that with his Grade 8 Health and PhysEd class during the 2019 Winter Term. He worked closely with Crescent Food Service Director Lawrence Mitchell, who welcomed the boys into Crescent's kitchen. They made quinoa fruit salad, strawberry and spinach smoothies, and easy (and healthful) chili con carne – and enjoyed sampling the results.

“This class provided an opportunity for our boys to learn in another setting,” says Vaisanen. “Having our boys learn in multiple ways allows for all types of learners to be successful”. He considers ways to incorporate active, experiential and relational learning styles when building his course plans to give the boys authentic and relevant learning experiences.

Vaisanen is also mindful of promoting student health and wellbeing. “We would love to continue to grow these types of activities in the coming years. The boys really seemed to have enjoyed it.”
