Head Boy Max Bennett, Class of 2018

When he joined Crescent School in Grade 7, Max Bennett remembers being surrounded by friendly faces who were eager to help him adapt to his new school.

“Today, Crescent feels like home to me,” says Max. “No matter what happens here every day, we each have our Crescent brothers, our teachers and our mentors to go through it all together.”

As Head Boy, Max wants all Crescent boys to know that they can rely on their Crescent family.

“You can't do it all alone,” he said in his speech at Crescent's opening assembly in September. “Don't be afraid to reach out to your brothers for support when you need it. That's what they're here for.”

Max also hopes every Crescent boy will be inspired by the Grad class motto: Now is the time. “We don't have to take the easiest path on our Crescent journey,” he said at the assembly. “We're all capable of seizing each day here, and making sure that valuable opportunities don't pass us by.”

Getting to know Max:

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
For me, perfect happiness is the satisfaction of accomplishing something that you care about and have worked hard for. There's nothing more rewarding than putting in time and having to overcome a variety of obstacles on the road to your success.

What is your greatest extravagance?
My greatest extravagance is my tenor saxophone that I received as a gift for my 13th birthday. I'm so glad that I asked for it as it's been important to helping me pursue my passion for music during my time at Crescent.

Which talent would you most like to have?
I think that being able to speak every language would be an awesome talent that would make travelling to other places in the world much easier, and ensure that I'd always have a way to talk to every person I meet.

What is your most treasured possession?
Although it's not particularly fancy or extravagant, my desk is the possession that has the most sentimental value to me. Over the past five years, I've spent many hours sitting here in the glow of my desk lamp, and I've learned to truly treasure my desk for everything it's done for me.

What do you want to be “when you grow up”?
I want to be an engineer. It combines my passion for problem solving with the two subjects I love the most: math and science.

Who are your heroes?
My heroes have always been my parents. They've inspired me, guided me through difficult periods of my life, and I owe so much of my success today to their endless positive encouragement.

What is your favourite sport?
I like running, racing in triathlons, playing soccer and badminton, but squash is absolutely my favourite sport. I love its fast pace and high-impact nature, and as an added bonus it's a fantastic workout.

What is your favourite book?
My favourite book is 1984. In my opinion, it's a literary masterpiece with so many important themes and hidden messages that are extremely pertinent to the world today.

What is your personal motto?
“Seize the Day.” It serves as a constant reminder for me to make every moment count, especially at a school like Crescent where we're always surrounded by dozens of incredible opportunities and ways to get involved.

What is your favourite place on campus?
Without a doubt, the Dining Hall is my favourite place on campus. There's never a shortage of interesting conversation and infectious laughter here, not to mention the awesome food that makes it difficult to limit myself to one serving each day. The runner-up for best location on campus would have to be the Grad Lounge, which has been a fantastic addition to Crescent this year.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Stuart, my pet cat, is the greatest love of my life. My family has had him for over 15 years and he's been a terrifically loving companion since I was very young.

What are you excited about for this year?
I'm looking forward to savoring my final year at Crescent with the best Grad class I could have ever asked for. I'm excited to see what positive changes we can effect throughout the school year, and what legacy we'll leave behind as we move on from Crescent.

What do you remember most about your first day at Crescent School?
I remember getting pneumonia from one of my classmates after sitting next to him on the first day of school. Fortunately, that initial experience didn't foreshadow what the rest of my time at Crescent would look like, and that classmate became one of my closest friends.

If you could give one sentence of advice to the Grade 3s, what would you say?
Savour every moment of your time at Crescent, and enjoy the comfort and bliss of your early years at this amazing school.
