New Podcast Explores How Boys Learn Best

A new podcast, WELLRead, shares expertise and experiences about the ways in which boys learn best. The four-episode series is produced by the Crescent Centre for Boys’ Education.

The podcast’s title has layers of meaning, says Dr. Sandra Boyes, Executive Director of the CCBE. “WELL represents our commitment to wellbeing and Read is an acronym for the three pedagogies we have chosen for our boys to thrive: Relational, Experiential and Active, while ‘D’ represents our commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Read also reflects the idea that we will be reading, researching and communicating new and current knowledge to ensure that we are offering our boys and teachers leading-edge and thoughtfully curated materials.”

The podcast will lean into Crescent School’s mission of Men of Character from Boys of Promise, says Boyes, by bringing together a variety of expertise and viewpoints on “boyology.”

“We created this podcast to feed our curiosity about how boys learn best,” says Trish Cislak, a Crescent faculty member and Director of Research for the CCBE. “We’re excited to listen and learn from current thought-leaders and influencers, colleagues, Crescent boys and our Crescent Alumni brothers.”

Episode 1, titled “Diversity,” features a discussion with two Grade 12 students from Crescent: Head Boy Tega Ajise and Assembly Prefect Caleb McLeod, and alumnus Dan Pringle ’05, who chairs the Crescent Alumni Diversity Committee. The episode is hosted by Cislak and Rob Messenger, Upper School Learning Support Specialist.

The WELLRead podcast is one of several initiatives from the CCBE, which was established in 2019 to elevate the role of research at Crescent School and foster a community of inquiry, particularly through action research, to inform teachers’ practice.
