Crescent was thrilled to welcome Canadian sprinting legend and seven-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse to campus for our Stransman Speaker full-school assembly on October 29. One of Canada's most celebrated athletes, De Grasse shared his inspiring journey to the Olympic podium, offering valuable lessons about perseverance and determination.
The event took a Q & A format, with De Grasse being interviewed by Athletics Prefect Ryan Smith ’27. He spoke about how his early mentors inspired him by setting high standards and providing strong support. Their belief in his ability gave him the confidence to pursue his Olympic goals. (Ed. Note: Interestingly, the concept of coupling high expectations with high support was echoed earlier in the week during Dr. David Yeager’s visit, which focused on how to motivate young people and help them reach their full potential.)
De Grasse also recalled overcoming a devastating injury in 2017, spending two years rebuilding his strength before returning to the podium, this time at the 2019 World Championships and then the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “I learned from that whole situation that I’m resilient. I could have thrown in the towel, but I kept going,” he said.
Reflecting on his experiences at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won gold in the men's 4 × 100 m relay despite a hamstring injury, De Grasse credited the mutual trust among his teammates and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and support team for helping him succeed.
As a speaker, De Grasse was a natural fit for Crescent. “He's always been a very open, honest speaker in interviews,” says Deputy Headmaster Rich Prosser. “When we talk about our four core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, and compassion, I think he personifies each of them in unique ways.”
The event was sponsored by the Leadership in Sports Endowment in Memory of John Stransman P’03, ’05.
