Crescent Boys Take the Stage at Duke of Edinburgh Youth Summit

Many students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, but most don’t get to meet the Duke himself. Three Crescent boys did that and more at the Duke of Edinburgh Youth Summit in Toronto on April 24 and 25. The summit is part of the global program that challenges and empowers young people outside the boundaries of formal education.

Tom Zheng '24 and Peter Lawetz '24 attended the summit, which was facilitated by Fahd Alhattab and featured special guest and gold award holder HRH Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh, KG GCVO. Attendees had the opportunity to provide ideas and share opinions related to the future of the Award in Canada and its impact on the lives of young people.

“My most memorable moment was definitely getting to talk with His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh,” says Zheng. “He joined in one of our table discussions on how the transition of the world into the technological age would impact the award. It was great to know that, as participants, we could voice our opinion on the future of the award.”

At the evening gala, Zheng and Jason Teng '24 created paintings as part of a live performance for attendees.

All three boys have completed their bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards, and are well on their way to completing the gold award. The boys were selected to participate because of the growth they have shown throughout their participation in the program. “They are doing it in true leadership fashion because that's what the Duke of Edinburgh is about,” says Director of Outreach Sheryl Murray. “They’re taking initiative and stretching their boundaries.”
