Crescent Sports Moustaches for Movember

Staff and students gave their razors a break in November, growing moustaches and raising funds in honour of Movember. Movember is a global initiative in support of men’s mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate and testicular cancers. Upper School Prefect Jonathan Blackman ’23 led the school team this year and was supported by Babak Mesgarzadeh ’23 and teacher Mr. Ian Eatock. “Movember is a great way to raise awareness for men’s health issues. It sparks conversations and it makes people feel more comfortable to ask for help.”

Since introducing the initiative at the Upper School Halloween assembly, Jonathan and Babak have been giving regular updates to their peers. The team compiled Mentor Group resources including a presentation on how to help a friend who is struggling. They also created a video with tips on growing a moustache and are planning a photo game of “guess whose moustache” which will be played during their campaign recap in early December.

Jonathan had originally set the fundraising goal at $3,000 but when that goal was met early on in the campaign, he knew his community could achieve more and raised the goal to an ambitious $10,000. Final numbers are being tallied, but Jonathan’s aspirations are sure to influence next year’s moustachioed fundraisers to set the fundraising bar high.
