Upper School Clubs Do Crescent Proud

Upper School Clubs Do Crescent Proud

The competitions and events are on Zoom this year, but that hasn’t prevented Upper School students from exploring their interests and representing Crescent with pride through their co-curricular activities. Here are some recent highlights:

DECA: Crescent Business Team members enjoyed excellent results at the provincial DECA competition this month. In addition to many team members placing in the top 15 written exams and top 21 oral exams, nine placed in the top 14 finalists, and Grade 12 students Evan Li and Nick de Villa-Choi qualified for the international competition.

Debate Team: Shay Kothari (Grade 10) and Hugo Hu (Grade 11) represented Crescent at the Senior Provincial Championships hosted by the Ontario Student Debating Union at the end of February. In a field of 88 of the province’s best debaters, they earned respectable finishes and good experience for their next competition.

HOSA: Grade 11 student Shayan Rakhshan launched Crescent’s chapter of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) this year. “As an avid biology keener and aspiring heart surgeon, I decided it was time for a club focused on health careers. Not only do I hope to gain experience and knowledge about specific careers in medicine, but I am aiming to inspire a whole generation of future health professionals,” says Shayan. The new HOSA club already has 26 members in the Upper School. They are representing Crescent at HOSA’s Fall and Spring Leadership Conferences and the Health Science Summit, and hope to qualify for the International Leadership Conference. They are also planning to host guest speakers from healthcare professions, which will be open to all students to attend.

Model UN: The online format hasn't held back Crescent's Model UN team. At the Canada Model UN Invitational (CanMUNI) in March, Stephen Woollcombe (Grade 12) was named Outstanding Delegate at the CanMUNI, and Sam Sui and James Guo (both in Grade 11) earned Outstanding Delegate awards in their respective committees. Sam also earned an Honourable Mention at the University of Toronto Model UN event earlier this year. Jonathan Blackman (Grade 10) earned Honourable Mention honours at the Havergal Model UN Conference in March.
