Supporting Our Local Community

During a year that has been difficult for so many, Crescent students have been busy making a difference in our local community.

Here are some highlights of Crescent’s outreach activities this year:

Crescent families made over 400 loaves of sandwiches, which were distributed to hungry people in the city by Sandwich Sisters, the Good Shepherd Centre, the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto. They also made copious amounts of salads and casseroles to feed 80-100 people once a month through the Friday Food Ministry at St. Thomas’s Church.

Working with Pathways For Education and the Rexdale Community Health Centre, 16 Upper School students put in 32 hours each since September to tutor younger children twice per week.

In the Lower School, students have enjoyed weekly conversations (via Zoom) with seniors at SPRINT Senior Care homes, and also mailed holiday cards to the residents.

In the Upper School, 106 students logged a total of 2,971 community service hours since June 1, 2020. Even while staying home, they found ways to help others.

Crescent students and staff donated 1,200 pounds of food for the Halloween Food Drive supporting the North York Harvest Food Bank and even more for the Toy & Food Drive supporting the Salvation Army

Outreach activities included environmental projects too. Crescent families participated regularly with Don't Mess With The Don clean-ups, clearing garbage from Toronto’s ravine trails along the Don River.

Students and faculty on the Crescent School Coyote’s Movember team raised nearly $9,000 for men’s health initiatives, ranking third out of 252 teams in the Canadian “Wispy Lips” high school challenge. Crescent’s Assistant Head of Middle School, Mr. Rob Cranston, personally raised $3,720, making him Canada's second-highest individual fundraiser.

In addition to individual fundraising by students and staff, Crescent School’s monthly “casual days” raised funds for selected charities, including:
  • Salvation Army Toy & Food Drive ($3,615)
  • Daily Bread Food Bank ($3,615)
  • Terry Fox Foundation ($1,812)
  • Canadian Breast Cancer Society ($1,825)
  • Movember ($3,615)
