Year-End Thoughts From The Middle School

By Rob Cranston, Assistant Head of Middle School
June is my least favourite time of the year, because it is time to say goodbye to our boys. Summer brings an eerie silence in Crescent's Middle School that doesn’t seem to belong. The energy of our boys, the hustle and bustle in the halls and classrooms, are missing. (Yes, September is my favourite time of year for the exact opposite reasons.)
At the end of the month, your sons will receive their report cards. I encourage you to sit down with them for a one-on-one chat. There are four questions that I feel are relevant and helpful to think about as the boys go into the summer break. These are also good questions to reflect on when the new school year starts in September:
  1. What did I do well this year?
  2. Where do I need to grow?
  3. What things will I challenge myself with next year?
  4. How will all these answers impact my learning?
None of the first three answers matter if they have no impact on our boy’s learning. What is important for each boy is that his growth leads to improvement and development of his skill set – which in essence will build his self-esteem. I strongly believe success is a platform that’s built on courage, struggle, failure and success.

If I could give any sage advice at all about the summer months ahead: spend as much time as you possibly can engaged with your boys. These years are special and go by far too quickly. Enjoy your family time and have a safe and happy summer.
