Climbing for Confidence

By Louis Tong ’26
Climbing has been a big part of my life. I started as a competitive climber when I was 10 and spent several years as a member of the Hong Kong National Youth Climbing Team. I’ve competed all over the world, including at the Youth World Championships. It is definitely nerve-wracking to compete at the highest level, but by redirecting my energy towards motivation and focusing on the wall in front of me, I can perform to the best of my ability, walking off the mats with no regrets. It wasn’t just about winning, but being able to improve and reach greater heights. Last year, I won the Ontario U19 Youth Provincial Championships and also competed in the Canadian National Open as a semi-finalist.
Climbing has always been my way to connect with people. When I joined Crescent last year, I wanted to share that passion with new friends, so I pitched the idea of leading an intersession week program called “Climbing x Growth Mindset.” It was a chance to introduce climbing as a fun and rewarding sport, while sharing the lessons I’ve learned as a student-athlete. I was grateful that several supportive teachers endorsed the idea and that many of my Crescent brothers signed up enthusiastically.

The Crescent community has inspired and taught me many things, one of which is to be an engaged citizen. I believe climbing can be for everyone, especially young people. Wanting to make it more accessible, I reached out to several NGOs serving youth from low-income neighbourhoods in Toronto in May 2025. Moorelands Kids responded positively. Through conversations with their program director, Mr. Borsook, I learned they were looking for fresh activities for VITAL Youth, their youth leadership initiative. My climbing idea turned out to be a perfect fit.

From proposing the idea to finalizing event details with the Moorelands Kids team, securing a climbing gym, and fundraising to cover the costs, I felt tremendous support from both the Crescent and climbing communities. After months of preparation, the event finally took place on Saturday, October 18. Together with a team of volunteers, I taught participants basic climbing skills and encouraged them to explore different routes. Watching them persevere, gain confidence, and eventually reach the top with huge smiles was incredibly rewarding. It was a powerful reminder of why I love this sport and how it can help others overcome challenges, one route at a time.

When I first joined Crescent, I was nervous about finding my place in a new community. It turns out all it took was one fearless first step and the determination to follow through. From building friendships at Crescent to inspiring youth facing tough circumstances, I’ve learned that sharing my passion for climbing helps me connect and give back. I’m no longer a stranger to Crescent or Toronto—this is where I belong, and where I can truly call home.
