Grade 9 Debaters Place Third In Canada
Crescent students Tony W. and Hugo H., both in Grade 9, placed third in Canada at the 2019 Junior National Debating Championships. They faced 54 of the top teams in the country at the competition, which was held May 23-26 in Montreal.
Tony and Hugo were novice debaters at the beginning of the year. In their first competitive experience, at the Hart House Debating Competition in February, they placed fifth out of 30 teams. Then in March, they earned a 5-0 win-loss record at the Ontario Student Debating Union tournament and were ranked the #1 Junior Team in the country.
Crescent faculty member Mita Bhattacharyya says the boys showed focus, insight and fluidity in their performances, and "demonstrated the kind of character we can be genuinely proud to celebrate."
