Research Project 5

Understanding why some adolescent boys do not like participating in grad nine gym class.
Supported by the Canadian Government, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

This research project is a national study with students participating in schools in Toronto, London, Vancouver, and Halifax. This research responds to concerns for inactivity among youth as well as issues related to boys, body image and physical well-being. Students are involved through interviews and weblogging opportunities that allow them the time to describe experiences and understandings of health and physical activity from an adolescent male perspective. The collaboration with Crescent School and specifically students at the Upper school will begin in October 2009. The research extends to British Columbia and Nova Scotia in 2009-2011. Researchers include Dr. Michael Kehler, The University of Western Ontario, Dr. Kevin Wamsley, The University of Western Ontario and Dr. Michael Atkinson, The University of Toronto. Recommendations from the project will have local, national and international implications.
