Robotics team takes First in Phoenix   ... posted March 30, 2012

During Crescent’s March Break holiday, our Robotics team (represented by 30 students, various parents and four staff) was down south. They weren’t on a beach however, but in the greater Phoenix area of Arizona for a regional qualifying event for the FIRST RobRobotics Champsotics competition in St. Louis in late April.

Crescent’s Robotics team (Team 610 Coyotes), works incredibly hard each year, and are always prepared, and competition ready. But this year, the boys have outdone themselves, and have won a regional tournament in Phoenix with an 11-0-0 record, coming home with the trophy, and placing the team in great standing for St. Louis.

This is the first 1st place win in 10 years at a qualifying competition, and is well deserved indeed! In addition to this great news, the team also won the GM sponsored Industrial Design Award. Crescent’s Head of Technological Design Don Morrison also took home an honour:  the Woodie Flowers Award. This prestigious award celebrates effective communication in the art and science of engineering and design, and was introduced in 1996 to recognize mentors who lead, inspire, and empower using excellent communication skills.

FIRST Robotics Competitions are fiercely competitive. On top of the engineering component, there is programming and design, as well as a huge amount of strategizing and gathering of intelligence. Out of the 30 Crescent students who were involved in Phoenix, 14 were scouting other teams, asking questions and finding the team they thought would be the best fit for the final rounds; when alliances are formed and teams join together to play against each other—determining the Rebound Rumble winner.

Crescent chose very well, picking a partner in Team 842 from Phoenix that in the end helped Crescent take home the trophy. After competing against teams from the States, as well as Mexico and Brazil, look out St. Louis... Crescent is on its way, and is counting down the days to the Championships!
