Wall of Honour - George Harris Hees


THE HONOURABLE GEORGE HARRIS HEES, P.C. O.C. CLASS OF 1922

George HeesAfter leaving Crescent, George Hees attended the Royal Military College in Kingston, the University of Toronto, and Cambridge University in England. He served in the Canadian Army from 1941 to 1944, when he was injured in the Battle of Scheldt.

First elected to the House of Commons in 1950, Hees served as Minister of Transport, and Minister of Trade and Commerce in the Diefenbaker Government, and as Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Seniors) under Mulroney.

Additionally, Mr. Hees was President of the Montreal Stock Exchange from 1963 to 1965, the Chairman of the Canada-United States Permanent Joint Board on Defence from 1979 to 1983, and was appointed Ambassador-at-large and personal representative of the Prime Minister in 1988 with a mandate to look into the transportation, storage and distribution of food aid.

Hees received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Waterloo University College in 1961 and an Honorary Doctor of Military Science degree from Royal Military College in 1986. On July 1, 1989, Mr. Hees was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
