ADMISSIONS    THE PROCESS     Lower School - Middle School - Upper School

SSAT Website

Once all applicants have completed the Admission process, Crescent School will determine which students are best-suited and best-prepared to join our School. Please see the Important Dates page for grade specific time lines and deadlines.

Select your grade of interest for a complete description of its admission process. We welcome your questions and you may direct them any time to Ms. Alanna Sanderson, Admissions Assistant, or Mr. David Budden,: Director of Admissions.

Grades 9 to 11 Admission Process

To determine a candidate’s suitability, our Admissions Committee considers each applicant’s previous report cards, Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) results, Current Teacher Assessment Form for Middle School Applicants, co-curricular interests/community involvement and an overall impression of the applicant from a personal interview.

Each year Crescent School admits 24 new grade 9 students. Although few boys leave Crescent before graduation, applications are also accepted for grades 10 and 11 in the event places become available. Briefly the admissions process takes into account the following:

  • The candidate’s previous report cards
  • The Secondary School Admissions Test [(SSAT)] entrance test
  • Current Teacher Assessment Form for Upper School Applicants
  • Co-curricular interests
  • A personal interview

The following outlines the general admission procedure for Grades 9-11.

Application Form

You may download, complete and print the application form HERE. Submit the completed application form and supplementary materials to the School by the prescribed deadline (see Important Dates). Please mark the envelope “Admissions” and address it to Crescent School, 2365 Bayview Avenue, Toronto Ontario M2L 1A2.

Note: Your son’s mid-year report card may be submitted when it becomes available.

Assessment Form

Download and complete the top portion of the Assesment for Upper School Applicants. Print the form and submit both pages to your son’s current teacher or chosen evaluator. This form will be submitted separately from the application by your chosen evaluator.

Your son’s current teacher may decline to complete the form. In this case you may ask a coach, religious education instructor or anyone who has instructed your son in some capacity (other than a relation) to complete the portions with which they are most familiar.

Interview

Interviews are arranged once a completed application package is received. Booking priority is given to the Grade 9 entry year, however, which means applicants to Grade 10 and 11 may not be sheduled until after March Break.

Ms. Alanna Sanderson, Admissions Assistant, will call to arrange a mutually convenient time for you and your son to come in for his personal interview. Each candidate for Grades 9-11 will be interviewed by Mr. David Budden, Director of Admissions.

The interview begins with a one-on-one meeting between the candidate and interviewer. Parents are then asked to join the candidate for an opportunity to ask questions. The entire interview process takes approximately 45 minutes. An optional tour of the School will add approximately 30 minutes to the appointment. Please visit the Interview page for preparation details.

Entrance Test

All Upper School applicants are required to write the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Visit www.ssat.org/ontario and there you will find several different test dates and locations to choose from. Crescent School's test centre code is 2667.

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) consists of two parts: a brief essay and a multiple-choice aptitude test which measures ability to solve mathematics problems, to use language and to comprehend what is read. Candidates for Upper School will write the "Upper" version of the test. Detailed instructions for arranging to take this test may be found HERE.

SSAT Myth: If students are coached, they are likely to increase their SSAT scores.
Fact: The difference that coaching can make in test scores is relative to the student’s sophistication in test-taking skills. Crescent recommends candidates order Preparing and Applying in order to gain some familiarity with the test. Test-taking skills can improve in a relatively short period of time with appropriate practice. Nothing is more useful or effective as learning specific subject matter at the traditional and presumably more thorough, pace established at school. No additional tutoring should be necessary to be successful on these tests.

Myth: The later a student writes, the better his/her scores will be.
Fact: The difference in scores will be negligible.
