ADMISSIONS    THE PROCESS     Lower School - Middle School - Upper School

SSAT Website

Once all applicants have completed the Admission process, Crescent School will determine which students are best-suited and best-prepared to join our School. Please see the Important Dates page for grade specific time lines and deadlines.

Select your grade of interest for a complete description of its admission process. We welcome your questions and you may direct them any time to Ms. Alanna Sanderson, Admissions Assistant, or Mr. David Budden, Director of Admissions.

Grade 7 Admission Process

To determine a candidate’s suitability, our Admissions Committee considers each applicant’s previous report cards, Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) results, Current Teacher Assessment Form for Middle School Applicants, co-curricular interests/community involvement and an overall impression of the applicant from a personal interview.

Each year Crescent School admits 28 new grade 7 students. In a nutshell the admissions process takes into account the following:

  • The candidate’s previous report cards
  • The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) entrance test
  • Current Teacher Assessment Form for Middle School Applicants
  • Co-curricular interests
  • A personal interview

The following outlines the general admission procedure for grade 7.

Application Form

You may download, complete and print the application form HERE. Submit the completed application form and supplementary materials to the School by the prescribed deadline (see Important Dates). Please mark the envelope “Admissions” and address it to Crescent School, 2365 Bayview Avenue, Toronto Ontario M2L 1A2.

Note: Your son’s mid-year report card may be submitted when it becomes available.

Assessment Form

Download and complete the top portion of the Assesment for Middle School Applicants. Print the form and submit both pages to your son’s current teacher or chosen evaluator. This form will be submitted separately from the application by your chosen evaluator.

Your son’s current teacher may decline to complete the form. In this case you may ask a coach, religious education instructor or anyone who has instructed your son in some capacity (other than a relation) to complete the portions with which they are most familiar.

Interview

Interviews are arranged once a completed application package is received. Ms. Alanna Sanderson, Admissions Assistant, will call to arrange a mutually convenient time for you and your son to come in for his personal interview. Each candidate for grade 7 will be interviewed by one of four Middle School interviewers: Mr. Mark Hord, Head of Middle School, Mr. Michael Ruscitti, Assistant Head of Middle School, Mr. Mark Suckling, Head of Middle School Mathematics or Ms. Godric Latimer Kim, Middle School Drama.

The interview begins with a one-on-one meeting between the candidate and interviewer. Parents are then asked to join the candidate for an opportunity to ask questions. The entire interview process takes approximately 45 minutes. An optional tour of the School will add approximately 30 minutes to the appointment. Please visit the Interview page for preparation details.

Entrance Test

All grade 7 applicants are required to write the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Visit www.ssat.org/ontario and there you will find several different test dates and locations to choose from. <Crescent School's test centre code is 2667.>

The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) consists of two parts: a brief essay and a multiple-choice aptitude test which measures ability to solve mathematics problems, to use language and to comprehend what is read. Candidates for grade 7 will write the "Lower" version of the test. Detailed instructions for arranging to take this test may be found HERE.

SSAT Myth: If students are coached, they are likely to increase their SSAT scores.
Fact: The difference that coaching can make in test scores is relative to the student’s sophistication in test-taking skills. Crescent recommends candidates order Preparing and Applying in order to gain some familiarity with the test. Test-taking skills can improve in a relatively short period of time with appropriate practice. Nothing is more useful or effective as learning specific subject matter at the traditional and presumably more thorough, pace established at school. No additional tutoring should be necessary to be successful on these tests.

Myth: The later a student writes, the better his/her scores will be.
Fact: The difference in scores will be negligible.

Grade 8 Admission Process

Few boys leave Crescent before graduation, however, applications are accepted for grades 8 each year in the event places become available. Briefly the admissions process takes into account the following:

  • The candidate’s previous report cards
  • The Entrance Test
  • Current Teacher Assessment Form for Lower School Applicants
  • Co-curricular interests
  • A personal interview (by invitation)

Interview

Once it has been determined how many places - if any - are available, a few candidates for grade 8 may be invited to attend a personal interview based upon the outcome of the entrance examinations. The interview process for non-entry grades begins after March Break.

Selected candidates for grade 8 will be interviewed by one of four Middle School interviewers: Mr.

The entire interview process takes approximately 30-45 minutes. An optional tour of the School will add approximately 30 minutes to the appointment. Please visit the Interview page for preparation details.

Entrance Test

Non-entry grade candidates write an in-house test based on Crescent School’s curriculum. Each test has both mathematics and language components. The test takes place at Crescent School in January (please see the Important Dates page for exact date and time). The test is age-appropriate and is designed so that students can be successful without any tutoring prior to the test date. The process is user-friendly and each component is clearly explained and clarified. Some sample questions for the Grade 8 examination are provided HERE file for your consideration.
