Lower School Philosophy
“ Men of character from boys of promise”
Creating men of character from boys of promise begins in the Lower School.
A Crescent education is exciting, fulfilling and broad. It is a school that
challenges each boy intellectually, artistically and athletically through
rigorous and creative curriculum and an extensive co-curricular programme.
Every September, the entire Lower School visits Tawingo Outdoor Education
Centre for a team building experience that sets a tone of cooperation and
mutual respect for the year ahead. To further this work throughout the year,
the Lower School has an exciting Citizenship and Character Education programme
that models and recognizes exemplary student behaviour.
At Crescent, we want your son to exceed his self-imposed limitations.
The Crescent School curriculum offers its students an advanced academic experience. Our faculty members are specialists in their areas. Crescent uses standardized testing every September and literacy testing every May to track our students' academic progress and to identify areas for strength and for growth.
The Language Arts and Mathematics curricula are taught using textbooks, materials and provincial expectations one grade level ahead of the public school system. In Science and Social Studies, the units taught match those of the provincial system; however, the writing and critical thinking expectations are those of the grade ahead, or higher.
Our Core French programme uses Wendy' Maxwell's "Accelerated Integrative Method" (AIM) which uses gestures, drama, story-writing and songs to teach French. Many students reach levels of fluency equal to those of immersion students.
Music and Visual Art, Physical Education and Information Technology courses are integrated into the overall curriculum. Lessons and projects in these courses have been designed to complement the themes studied in the other subjects
